Van Gogh and Britain: Tate Britain
Van Gogh stayed in London, working for a Dutch art dealer from 1873 to 1875 and visited again for several months in 1876, when he worked as a lay-preacher. He was not yet a painter and didn't lift a brush whilst he was here. He visited the national art collection though, got to know British artists, drew and read a lot. His reading included Charles Dickens, George Eliot and Thomas Carlyle and he regularly bought The Sketch illustrated journal). All of which would feed his concern for the life of the poor and would influence his later work, quite a lot of which, from right across his short, but brilliant career as an artist is on display in this very engaging exhibition - with some fantastic mature work by van Gogh and paintings by major 20th-century British artists he influenced. Dorothea Tanning, Tate Modern

What's this item about? What makes it interesting? It brings together 100 works from her seven-decade career – from enigmatic paintings to uncanny sculptures.
Tanning first encountered Surrealism in New York in the 1930s and later moved on to etherial abstract paintings. She wanted to depict ‘unknown but knowable states’: to suggest there was more to life than meets the eye.
